Does Music Change a Child's Brain?

Music is part of our lives. It has a significant impact on your emotions and how we react to the sounds. This is something you can notice in children from childhood because they readily respond to music. No matter how young, music touches our brains, causing different reactions.  But does music change a child's brain?

Scientists have begun to use music to try to understand brain function. They also use it to attempt to change how the brain works. These studies ask the question of whether music is suitable for children's brain development.

Music and Brain Development

Children go through yearly check-ups to determine their progress. Doctors measure physical attributes such as height and weight and then compare them to universal growth charts to assess development.

There are currently no tests to measure brain development even though it is an essential part of growth in children. Furthermore, there are no brain development charts to line up these findings.

The start of this process, however, is already underway. Scientists have brain imaging equipment that they use to conduct tests, to see how the brain responds to different things. This equipment helps to determine the developmental journey of the human mind.  We can even evaluate the effects of music on adult brains.

The Brain Development Study

Many studies focus on music and the brain, especially the effect of music on brain development. In particular, research focuses on children's brain development as they take up music, including piano lessons.

The starting baseline is where children have not played a musical instrument. They are then monitored as a child, begin to play an instrument and follow them for five years. The study measures brain activity and development, behavioral attributes, and the connection between the two.

The results show that with each year of practice, children who played an instrument got better at playing the instrument, and it reflected in their studies, confidence levels, reading skills, and time-keeping.

The results also showed that music is vital to children beyond becoming skilled players. Therefore, music and piano playing is an activity that can benefit all children, even if they are not musically inclined. It will help them with brain development.
